I'm not sure this counts, but I would say Coldplay. I paid to see them 3 times, but I still haven't seen them play. They canceled every show I went to see a few years ago in 3 different cities. I stopped trying.

roastedbagel 13 points14 points 10 months ago[-]

I don't know why, but I LOL'd at this. Not at you, but just the situation in general.

smokeshack 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Coldplay was my most disappointing concert, too. I went to Sasquatch a few years ago and saw Modest Mouse (decent), Flaming Lips (awesome), and Jurassic 5 (JAWSOME), with Coldplay headlining. I had a giant headache from jumping up and down, smoking pot and standing near speakers, so when Coldplay came on we all said, "Yeah, I don't actually like Coldplay. Let's go play cards in the tent."

Wu-Tang Clan. Saw them earlier this year in Tucson at the Rialto. Not only did they have FOUR opening acts (they appeared 3.5 hours after the show started), when they finally did come out on stage they never played a full song. Each song would end about two-thirds of the way through before a guy playing the backing tracks would just play a bunch of gunshot noises and the song would end. WTF? It was my first rap show, so maybe I'm missing something?

kuruptr 6 points7 points 10 months ago[-]

Sadly, a lot of rap shows are like this in some respect or another. The few that aren't are golden.

[deleted] 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I just went to my first rap show last night (Snoop Dogg). It was really.. different than a rock show. At one point, he simply divided the crowd into East-Side and West-Side; then he spent the next five minutes going back and forth while the sides alternated shouting "WUT WUT WUT WUT WUT" with the music...

He did bring a sweet band with him though. They were extremely tight and a nice treat as I was expecting a DJ with a notebook..

DirtyBinLV 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw Wu-Tang a year and a half ago at the House of Blues in Vegas, with no opening act, and it was nothing like that. They did complete versions of all the songs everyone wanted to hear, along with a proper tribute to ODB.

jeremybub 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

The gunshot noises signify Clan brotherhood.

hangoneveryword 13 points14 points 10 months ago[-]

MGMT. They were completely disengaged from the audience until the last song, when they were drunk enough that they started cursing at us.

sonQUAALUDE 3 points4 points 10 months ago[-]

im with you man, i love oracular spectacular and saw them in boston on one of their big first tours. they sucked SO HARD. it was like a wedding band covering mgmt. The only song that was good the last song (just like your experience) when they played "kids": the "band" left the stage and the 2 vocalists sang along to a track. yay. MGMT karaoke. ...and it was still better than the rest of the set.

When you saw them did they have that hack guitarist playing random blues solos all over the place? SOOO WEAK.

Bob Dylan at ACL fest 2007. It's a damn good thing I was there for the fest and not just to see him.

jaxler45 3 points4 points 10 months ago[-]

Damn. You couldn't even see his face.

kenyonc 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

Saw him in Savannah, GA almost by accident in 2005. It was so painful I had to leave halfway through his set. Some artists age well.... Bob Dylan is not one of these.

noise-nut 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw him in Santa Barbara. It was so bad, I have even described it on earlier reddit pages.

Rette 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

I saw Bob Dylan last year, and I agree completely. I hated seeing one of my musical gods ruin his own songs.

Rabid_Weasle 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Bob Dylan has never played his songs like they are on the album. He's probably never played any song of his the same way twice. This is what he does.

strangerzero 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

I love his records but I won't go and see him make a mockery of his great songs in concert.

OralB 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

How do you like his most recent albums? He's an artist who has managed to remain fresh after 45+ years of public creativity. His new material is definitely as good as the old.

I've seen Dylan quite a few times and I'll keep going as long as I'm able. I know that many people don't enjoy him in concert anymore. People don't like his voice, they can't understand him, he doesn't play the guitar much, etc. I'll keep the chip on my shoulder and just have to say, "They don't get it."

The Mars Volta. I love prog music and I love their albums, but their live show just made no sense to me. It just sounded like a bunch of noise.

mygenericfriend 13 points14 points 10 months ago* [-]

In a fairly related note, the worst gig I saw was At the Drive-in back at the Sydney Big Day out back in 2002 .. Having followed on from Mudvayne who put on an awesome show and encouraged the crowd to stay around for the At The Drive-in, the first words out of Cedric's mouth were something like "I want you to stop acting like a typical bunch of fucking white people and stop moshing.. You've all been listening to too much fucking heavy metal"

Within 1 or 2 songs it had degenerated into the singer screaming "Baaaahhh Bahhhh, you're sheep.. Fucking white people" or something to that end. Eventually the crowd started throwing everything they had at them and they stormed off stage.

Took me a long time to come around to the Mars Volta because they were such tools on stage that day.

marmalade 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Yeah, I was at the Melbourne show held after Jessica Michalik got crushed to death in the Limp Bizkit mosh. Side note: Jesus, in hindsight, what a horrible way to go.

Man, were they touchy that day. They must've warned the crowd six or seven times that they'd pull the pin if anyone moshed. They were on a smaller stage that usually features more esoteric bands than the main stages and therefore attracts cooler crowds, though. Everyone behaved and they played a pretty awesome set, from memory.

cajun_super_coder 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Hmm... Right around that time Linkin Park released their Meteroa album. I caught them on tour with Blindside, Xzibit (lulz), and Mudvayne. Me and my friends were there for Mudvayne, my little brother and his friends were there for Linkin Park.

I was into At the Drive-in back then, and was pleasantly surprised with Blindside. As for Xzibit... he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. This was before he had his Pimp My Ride popularity. Also of some note, he had some albino guy rapping with him too... /shrug

In before "Yo Dawg...".

joebleaux [S] 8 points9 points 10 months ago[-]

DisConform 5 points6 points 10 months ago[-]

I have had close to religious experiences at the five Mars Volta shows I've attended. But then again I consider John Coltrane to be just about the greatest musician to have ever lived. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez stands in his shadow. I also consider Thomas Pridgen to be the hardest driving drummer performing today. They are very jam oriented, but you have to loose yourself in the flow of it all. If you can... you will be moved. If you can't, then yeah.... it's just noise.

dsfargeg1 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

But Pridgen only has one volume level. He has no dynamics. He doesn't even have any feel IMO. He's eclipsed by the previous drummer, but logistics are logistics, & the band couldn't stand the old guy anymore. Tis a shame.

It's a reference to a phenomenon described on 30 Rock called backdoor bragging. Basically, it's when someone slips a compliment to themselves into everyday conversation. No offense to DisConform if he/she reads this, but I find attributing your enjoyment of a prog rock concert to your complex and sophisticated taste in music to be a bit much. I may also have misinterpreted the comment, but that's how it read to me.

DisConform 1 point2 points 10 months ago* [-]

I love Mars Volta as a band, as a unit. If they have a weak link, I can agree that it is Cedric's vocal limitations. But I don't expect perfection in the abstract.

ltriant 4 points5 points 10 months ago[-]

Hmm... I like that the play half a song, go off in another direction for 6-7 minutes and then finish the song, because it's not a recording of the song I can get from a CD and will probably never hear at another of their concerts again.

I guess we just go to concerts for different reasons ;)

SElain 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I've only seen them once, when they toured on De-loused in the Comatorium and opening for A Perfect Circle. I was conflicted: I really enjoyed their jam sessions, but at the same time, I only got to hear about three songs because they digressed into these 12 minute medleys.

aestus 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw The Mars Volta in 2007 and as I remember, it was very good. Although I did have the advantage of hearing them in a theatre so the sound was very good. I can bet they do sound like noise sometimes though, the guitarist is always using those fucking sound effects.

Incidentally, I met them after the show and shared some beers and spliffs with them, the guitarist was a short shy dude, but the drummer was a fucking legend, and I think the keyboardist just wanted to go the strip club...keyboardists!

spacemunkey420 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

I keep hearing conflicting things about Mars Volta. I from experience I can say it somewhat of a diceroll. When i saw them open for A Perfect Circle in Seattle they were absolutely incredible. Even 2 of my friends who are obsessive Maynard fans (they each have Tool tattoos!) agreed that they outshined APC. But when they played at Endfest they bitched at the crowd for moshing, then someone threw a water bottle full of piss on the stage, and they walked off after only playing for like 20 minutes after calling the crowd a bunch names and resolving never to come to back to Seattle.

dsfargeg1 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw Clapton in 2004. He was totally outclassed by his opening act (Robt Randolph{?} and the family band) and the only decent part of the show was the acoustic blues set.

And the nosebleed tickets were $70. Boring, expensive, and all-around sad.

In other news, I got to see CSN for free a few weeks ago and they were terrific.

joebleaux [S] 15 points16 points 10 months ago[-]

For me, it was The Smashing Pumpkins. I have always been a fan, and they had been around so long that I just assumed the live show was going to blow me away. When I finally saw them at Voodoo Fest 2 years ago, I was totally disappointed. They blew through all the songs everyone knows and loves with truncated 2 minute versions, then proceeded to play extended ambient noise versions of every single song from the new album that nobody really likes that much. I ended up leaving the show early and very bummed out.

beansworth 11 points12 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw them on this tour too (but who didn't...the tour was 2 years long). They were amazing. 5 encores.

camotito 5 points6 points 10 months ago[-]

I got to see them in NYC for their 2-day 20th Anniv. Tour. While they played all the songs that the fans wanted to hear, Billy was a major douche and you could tell that he was not enjoying playing most of the songs. I also got the chance to meet with them backstage, and Billy refused to shake anyone's hand, whereas Jimmy was generally a nice guy. Whenever anyone asked Billy a question he pretty much sighed and answered.

Major letdown, coming from a fan of theirs for 14 years.

Any hip-hop show other than Atmosphere, The Roots, De La Soul, Blue Scholars, KRS-One, beastie boys, Lyrics Born, the Coup, and a few others.

I have been consistently let down by late arriving, early leaving, drunken, half-assed performances from rappers. Even the legendary Wu-Tang are pretty hit or miss. Why do so many rappers only sing one verse and then jump into a medley? Props to those that really bring it.

My Chemical Romance. I wasn't actually going for MCR, I was going for Muse, who were (for some inexplicable reason) opening for them on a bunch of North American tour dates. After buying a ticket to go with a friend who loves MCR, I discovered Muse weren't coming up to Canada for the tour, so I was left with a ticket to see a band I didn't like.

The opening act was The Bled. Possibly the worst piece of crap I've ever listened to. MCR, at least, put on bit of a show with lights and fire and a few other theatrics so I was entertained in that respect. Compared to The Bled, MCR sounded positively wonderful. To add insult to injury, as I was leaving the stadium after the show feeling very unsatisfied, they started playing Knights of Cydonia over the stadium speakers.

Infinity_Wasted 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

wow.. really? I've seen MCR 4 times, and they've always left me feeling pretty good.. I will admit that The Bled blows. some people like the sound, but I'm not partial to it. I need to hear some kind of singing or it ain't gonna fly (in my opinion).

MGMT at Bonnaroo. They played without any energy and sounded terrible. They were the last show one night, so everyone was pretty drunk/tripping and many seemed to enjoy it, but probably only because they heard songs they recognized.

Everyone I was with agreed it was the worst show we saw at Bonnaroo this year.

likefools 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

Really? I was at that show and I thought it was one of the best at Bonnaroo. Maybe I'm too easily pleased.

I saw them with low expectations because I didn't really like them at the the time. But I was pretty close to the stage and everyone around me was enjoying themselves so much, which rubbed off on me. It may have helped that I was slightly stoned as well.

Out of curiousity, what was your favorite show?

I really fancy The Cure.

However, I walked out (sort of, I was already out) after four or five boring songs from their then most recent album (2002). Very disappointing. Don't play dull new songs at festivals, those are for MTV.

Turns out, as I was walking around between other stages looking for concerts, that they started playing old songs (A Forest, Killing an Arab, In Between Days) towards the end of their set. Tough luck.

Also, Thievery Corporation, but only because they played inside, in a seated hall, with seated people and VIP seats with VIPs in the front. It felt like we were monkeys, subject of an experiment to see how long we can sit on our seats while the band jumped around, doing their best to get everybody up. Stupid organizers.

funkentelchy 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

A Thievery Corporation show where everyone's sitting down? That sounds bizarre and awkward. I'm sorry you paid to go to that.

I think you're right about festivals. At a big festival there will always be too many people in the audience who never listen to the band, and who don't have the patience for the more personal songs, space-jams, and experimental new stuff, that only a die-hard fan would enjoy.

trevorpinzon 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

Tool. They seemed to just be going through the motions, and I got the feeling they just wanted to get the fuck out of there as fast as possible.

jaydorn 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Yup same here, $70 for a freaking lazer show that also featured musicians.

mbot01 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Yeah, I think tool was one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I used to listen to them a lot in the 90's, but it was disappointing to see them doing the exact same thing over ten years later. I thought it was humdrum, but maybe that's because I wasn't deluding myself with Maynard worship.

limprichard 4 points5 points 10 months ago[-]

Clinic. Lead singer was a charisma suck. Couldn't be bothered to keep his energy up after his part of the song was finished. I wasn't sure if he was outwardly hostile or completely nervous. The Rapture opened for them, and blew them on their asses.

Stone Roses on the Second Coming tour. Reni's replacement didn't have the chops. Ian was condescending. They refused to give us an encore, though people cheered for one for quite a while.

Interpol. So dull I eventually turned to watch the wall.

Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheels tour. It seriously all came down to set list that night (I've heard other people say amazing things about that tour). Whenever they played a good rocker, they'd defuse it with one of their lamer songs (that's you I'm calling out, "Harlem Shuffle").

DexterDoakes 3 points4 points 10 months ago* [-]

Public Enemy. Flavor Flav didn't show up, Chuck D still put on a great show but I don't think it reached its potential with no Flavor Flav.

Run DMC in 2000. Horrible. They came on about an hour late and only played 3 songs. They spent the whole time talking about how awesome they were. And Run was being kind of dick to DMC through the whole show.

[deleted] 4 points5 points 10 months ago[-]

The Mountain Goats.

I loved that band, and after seeing them live I simply can't listen to any of their music. Their entire catalog went from (in my mind) one of the most brilliantly original and uniquely emotional in rock history, to a collection of B-rate gimmicks and stage tricks.

I feel bad writing such a harsh review, because I was so fond of their recordings, but almost two years later, I still feel cheated by the live experience.

cryforburke 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Seen them 9 times. I have never seen a band so hit-or-miss. Both one of the worst AND one of the best. First one was in 1989 at Long Beach Arena. Terrible show, I was so disappointed. It was documented on a live concert video. The show was so bad, some songs on the video were synced to the studio versions. The next three were so amazing I couldn't believe it was the same band. Later, my wife and I saw them separately on consecutive nights, the first one was in LA- I saw it and it was smoking. The next night was in San Diego, and my wife walked out it was so bad.

sofiseymor 4 points5 points 10 months ago[-]

joebleaux [S] 3 points4 points 10 months ago[-]

estone 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw REM start their tour in Vancouver last year. It was an epic show. Depends on the band I suppose.

[deleted] 5 points6 points 10 months ago[-]

Coheed and Cambria. Maybe they were just having an off night, but they seemed totally uninterested in being on stage and just sort of ran through the motions, sang off-key, played out of sync, and didn't make any attempt to even acknowledge the crowd. It was kind of depressing to watch them 'perform', if you can even call it that.

joebleaux [S] 5 points6 points 10 months ago[-]

I have had this same experience with Coheed as well. They are one of my favorite bands regardless. I saw them open for Slipknot, and it was bad, basically exactly what you are describing. They rushed through it and just got out of there. The crowd didn't seem to want them up there either.

However, I have seen them several times, and that was the only occasion that they disappointed me. I saw them at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans, and it was great, and then the next week I saw them at The Wiltern in LA, and they melted my face off. Hands down one of the best shows I ever saw. If you do like them and haven't got too bad of a taste in your mouth about the whole thing, check out the Neverender concert series DVD, that concert was like a life changing experience for me. The Second Stage Turbine Blade disc is amazing, I have probably watched it 50 times.

i've seen modest mouse many times... two times in particular were terrible. once was at the galaxy club in dallas in 2000 or 2001... he was super drunk before the show even got started. after about 3 songs he just left the stage. the bass and drums played a jam for about 5 minutes, and then stopped and said they were sorry but Isaac was sick and wouldn't return. they promised to come back and do a free show someday, but they never did.

the other time was at ACLMF in prob '04 or '05... it was really hot, and Isaac just wasn't into it.

every other time i've seen them it was good times though...

cabbit 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

Nightwish with their new singer was somewhat disappointing. It was still Nightwish and fun, but their new singer is not exactly the best fit for an operatic metal outfit.

The Stars show at the Malkin Bowl in Vancouver six months ago or so was disappointing. Not because they were bad, not by any stretch of the imagination. But they blew the doors off the Commodore the previous November. It was one of the best shows I'd ever been at, and to see them again playing only a 'good' show was disappointing.

MsSarah 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

voracity 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

I hated Tarja (and Nightwish along her) with a passion, but ever since that new singer came along, they lost any shred of respect I had for them and are now a total sellout shitfest, a ready-for-tv band that only 9-year-olds take seriously.

cabbit 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Radiohead. I was way far away on the lawn and I failed to realize I didn't like Radiohead enough to pay 40 dollars to see them. It felt like I was sitting in lawn bored while various Radiohead MP3's were being played really loud. So boring and a waste of money. And yes I'm not joking. evanvolm 25 points26 points 10 months ago[-]

Your retarded.

wrusso 8 points9 points 10 months ago[-]

Yeah, I have to agree. I really love the band, but sitting on the lawn defeated the purpose of going. The crazy light show was so far away that I felt like I was watching a video of a concert on a clamshell cell phone.

giunta13 8 points9 points 10 months ago[-]

Tip I've learned from going to large venue concerts: Have half of your friends buy seats and other half lawn. Print out our seat tickets twice. Use your seat/lawn tickets to enter venue and then use the seat tickets to get by that second line of security. Most of the time for seats/GA they just look at the ticket and don't scan anything so they'll let you into that section without having to pay that crazy price. I did this for a Radiohead show and sitting close made everything so surreal. Great time.

DogBotherer 2 points3 points 10 months ago* [-]

Frankly I hate big venues full stop (period to my US colleagues). Better to see a band in a small venue if you can, if you're too late just keep your fingers crossed they do a back to their roots tour under a pseudonym or something. Big venues cost outrageous amounts of money and just aren't worth it. Festivals are different, although, in recent years, the atmosphere at those isn't what it once was. Way too "orchestrated" these days.

johnideal 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Which tour was it? I've seen them a number of times and it's funny, I always felt they were one of the most inclusive bands in the live setting, regardless of size of audience. I've seen them twice since they were properly a huge band and each time it was great; the crowd was super respectful, everyone appeared to be enjoying the music and it still felt like a small venue experience.

(I'll note as well that I am a huge concert snob, inasmuch as I hate going to live shows because the audience almost always ruins it for me. Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens are the only exceptions to the rule that I've experienced personally.)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

I like their records a lot, but somehow it didn't occur to me that it might suck to stand in one spot while they played 2 hours of droning, fuzzed-out shit.

Shows are much better when there's a show. And, you know, songs. I like a good droning jam just as much as the next guy, but they played maybe three fast, heavily melodic songs the entire set.

eggnogdog 2 points3 points 10 months ago* [-]

NINJA, Nine Inch Nails and Janes Addiction. In all fairness, I'm not a Jane's fan so mainly: Trent Reznor. The music was fine, I guess, it was a big venue, it sounded as someone said before "like hearing MP3s at a distance." What really made me pissed: the stage lighting was monochromatic. It was yellowish lights in different orientations. Yellowish, not yellow, not white, in between. Woo. Up and down. Left and right. Sometimes a nondescript pattern. It was the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix which is appropriately named. Or at least it would be if it weren't pretty much the sole venue of its kind here. I just can't believe Trent would let it be that lame considering some of the NIN concert videos on youtube are beyond epic [look up Hurt; it doesn't get much better].

And just because I'm venting: Let's talk about the Dodge Theater. You know how TVs have viewing angles? At a certain angle, you can't see what's on the TV. The Dodge Theater does that to real life. It's that stupid.

It's funny, but at the time the most disappointed I was was seeing They Might Be Giants. This was probably during their first national tour, and it was just the two Johns with... a bunch of pre-recorded backing tracks.

Oddly, though, a couple things from that show stayed with me and I've grown fonder and fonder of remembering bits and pieces. Especially the song with the baritone sax and the log. They played the stage with a log. That was pretty cool.

SandraD04 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

Beck. Austin City Limits 2008. Everyone kept saying how amazing he is live. Maybe he was just having an off night, but I thought he was crap... We left early.

algorhythm 1 point2 points 10 months ago* [-]

As I a huge Beck fan I can tell you that the 2008 Modern Guilt tour was a very "off" tour. Beck had no fun at all making Modern Guilt and clearly did not want to be touring behind it. There were some good shows though; I saw the Oregon show and he was in a much better mood, so the show was much better. The European tour before the American leg was truly awful anyway. I've listened to a recording of the ACL show and it was worse than usual Beck shows but not that awful. Anyway Beck has since cut all that hair off, started smiling again, played a rocking Japanese tour leg with new songs, and done some really interesting things for the hell of it:

Covered all of The Velvet Underground & Nico

Covered all of Songs of Leonard Cohen with MGMT

Released an acoustic version of Modern Guilt that is WAY better than the original

Interviewed both Will Ferrell and a music video extra that looks like Will Ferrell.

Made weekly themed mixtapes

Also, Beck was AMAZING live in the 90s, see here (Sorry for the bad quality, this is my favorite clip from this era.)

That Beck has been lost to the ages because he decided that Midnite Vultures was so ridiculuosly ridiculous that people weren't taking him seriously enough (Sea Change and the Flaming Lips fiasco didn't help). He also wrecked his back filming the video for E-Pro, which involved him being hung by his wrists and ankles and being manipulated like a puppet in front of a green-screen.

I love listening to spoon, so when I saw that they were on the bill at Austin City Limits a couple years back I got really excited. While they have a bunch of energy on their tracks, they didn't bring any of it to the stage.

U2

Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that I hate them, but I got the ticket cheap, had a steady supply of beer, it was a 5 minutes walk from my house and let's face it, Zoo TV was really great.

It sucked. The concert was boring as hell, and watching it with 40 000 people who were there just because of a famous band, not the music, was depressing. The stadium atmosphere was sterile and the band didn't even try because they knew people will shit their pants only because they saw Bono from a hundred feet.

Snow Patrol was the opening act. gosh It's like listening to Coldplay, only worse. The songs are all the same, their sound is so fucking... bland and mainstream that it sickens me. Not mainstream in the sense that they're popular, but their music is so neutral and without any excitement that I felt sorry for them.

Bevatron 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Ben Folds. No energy and my seats were sooooooo far away and the venue blew. Plus I went with this guy who ended up being the biggest tool ever. Lousy experience all around, but at least the guy paid for the tickets!

I saw a disappointing Radiohead show at MSG several years ago (right after Kid A). The band basically just played the album, never really acknowledged the crowd, and the entire arena just sat there. Maybe that's what their shows are like (counter-example, anyone?), but it didn't seem worth the $60.

Lots of other shows have been great, U2, Beck, Wu-Tang, even Van Halen. This one was a stinker.

Dave Mathews Band at Bonnaroo 2005. Not only were they not as exciting (if you can say that their music is exciting... but that is another topic) as I thought they would be live, they were sort of lame to be honest. They had some great guests come out and play with them but it all felt like background music not a show. Also while I was lying down resting since I was trapped at the front of the crowd some guy decided turn around and take a leak all over my shoes and the person next to me. I guess you could say the show was worst for the other guy. But that was my most disappointing show. When the highlight is getting peed on you know there are issues.

Snoop Dogg at Bonnaroo 2009. He was 20 minutes late, and it seemed like he didn't even care. He went through the motions of all his hits, threw in a massive amount of set-filler which included an east-coast vs west-coast division of the crowd which took up 10 or 15 bullshit minutes (it's not '97), and a tribute to 2pac which, I shit you not, consisted of Snoop and his crew playing a recording of a 2pac song. I waited the whole song thinking snoop would at least have a verse on that song that he would rap for us, but no. Just a recording. A couple of my friends saw him a few weeks later and he did the same shit! Dude just takes a break from his blunts to go through the motions on stage so he can get paid. So sad.

Not to sound like a hippie cliche but he is totally not appropriate for Bonnaroo. The festival was built around a jam band vibe and bands that take their music very seriously. Over the last few years that has changed and now they seem to just invite anyone, and now you get this kind of thing - the same crap you get at any other festival anywhere in the world.

Dashboard Confessional. (No judging! They are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me and we went because my ex-GF liked them so much.)

Anyway, they played for ONE HOUR, that was it and they were the headliner with just one band before them. That and the leader singer kept doing this thing where he would stop singing and hold the mic over the crowd and they would sing. He did it for like 6 songs.

Death Cab for Cutie - half the band members played one song while the other half played another. Quit partially through their last song.

Circa Survive - Seen them 3 times. First show was awesome. The other 2, Anthony Green was so "sick"(I call it drugs) that his voice screeched the whole time and just sounded awful. Will never see him live again.

Perry Ferrell - saw him DJ once and he overdosed on heroin and had to be escorted off the stage 5 minutes into the show. He was drooling and could barely lift his head.

The day before the festival had been his 60th birthday or something, and he came an hour or two late because he had been in hospital where they emptied his stomach to prevent an alcohol poisoning. But apparently he insisted to do the show and you can imagine how well he performed. He fell a couple of times, struggled to keep on foot and staggered all over the stage. It was a fun day nonetheless.

Animal Collective at Bonnaroo. It wasn't really their fault though.

For starters, it was really freakin' hot. It was like the sun was magnified 10 times and was shining only on that concert. People were dropping like flies because of heat exhaustion.

So there's that, and also the fact that most daytime shows are very underwhelming compared to their nighttime brethren. You don't get any crazy light show or anything. Also, I was quite far from the stage, which sucks as well.

But I love Animal Collective, and I will definitely try to see them again because I'm sure they put on awesome shows.

ChefEspeff 2 points3 points 10 months ago[-]

I saw Animal Collective in Milwaukee this summer and it sucked. The sound was ridiculously muddy and the music itself was more boring than anything I've seen. Imagine stretching out each section of an Animal Collective song to 3 times its original length, so songs are three times as long but there are still as many changes in "feel". (if that makes any sense)

The Raconteurs at Roo 08' in the daytime was one of the best shows I'd ever seen. Course not everyone has the energy and showmanship that Jack White has

funks 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

Animal Collective is an interesting band because their live show is actually more like a jam-session or rehearsal. They tweak and tweak their songs so much that the album versions hardly sound like their live counterparts. For example, the song 'Taste' was much better live, but they changed it for the album version.

Led Zeppelin at the Mannheim Eisstadion 1980. In my naivete, I imagined that they would be much more of a rocking band, but 2/3 of the concert was incredibly boring.

I've seen worse shows to be sure, but I was never as disappointed as I was at that show.

Webbie6 1 point2 points 10 months ago[-]

As much as I am in love with Led Zep, and would let any one of them, even Jon Bonham's ghost bone me. I can definitely picture Led Zeppelin as one of those bands that would enjoy dragging every single song out into a 20 minute long practice in masturbatory instrumentals.

Some people enjoy that, I am not one of them.

Ghostface Killah. Love his album stuff, but every time he's onstage his whiny persona is just... too real. He doesn't even rap half the time, leaving his cronies to fill in the verse while he stands in the background and shouts at the stage techs for more water. I've seen him twice now, once solo, once with the Clan, and each time he's not been anywhere close to what I've come to expect from a quality hip-hop show.

I was actually far too young to have a substantial opinion about that show. I was not quite twelve at the time. My brother dragged me along to the concert. He also took me to Led Zep which was a disappointment.

I saw Jethro Tull in 1999, when I was 12. I enjoyed the show, but my expectations were so high, and I don't think they've been particularly good live in some time. Ian Anderson's voice was shot, which it apparently has been for years now.

It almost turned me off from trying to see classic bands live, but I saw Steely Dan when I was in high school, and that was a great show.
