Okay Reddit, what bands do you think have gotten BETTER with time? (self.Music)
submitted 6 months ago by hknol
Off the top of my head, I'll have to say Between The Buried And Me and Mastodon, both of their most recent albums are epic and masterful compared to their firsts (Which aren't bad-but they've gotten better). Another might be Katatonia, The Great Cold Distance was amazing.

Definitely not rubber bands. They dry out over time and lose their elasticity. Much better when they're new. Hope this helps!!!

Talk Talk last two albums (Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock) are work of genius. I can't stand their earlier stuff.
Some say they invented post-rock with those albums. They dissolved shortly thereafter in an overdose of greatness.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Battles. Even though they haven't been around long, Mirrored was a huge leap forward compared to their earlier stuff.

Spoon...although their catalog could be considered an arch as some would argue that they peaked at Kill the Moonlight/Gimme Fiction, while others believe that Ga^5 was just as good. Hopefully Transference will be great.
Fantasysage 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago[-]
Wow, I am amazed to find another spoon fan here. I just went ahead and posted spoon with out doing a Ctrl+F because I never find any fans of them on the internet.
I love their whole catalog, even their damned EP's are great (Love Ways is the shit). I think Gimme Fiction may be the most approachable of all their albums, and why it is considered their best. My personal Favorite album so far is Girls can tell, yet my favorite song is Two sides of monsieur valentine. It is very rare for me to find a band where I can pick up any album and listen to it all the way through and love the whole damned thing.

Streetlight Manifesto. They just keep getting better. Especially if you include Catch 22 in that timeline.
thederby777 7 points8 points9 points 6 months ago[-]
Streetlight is pretty amazing but I don't know if it's better than catch 22 Keasby Nights... and honestly I liked Everything Goes Numb better than Somewhere in the Between, but they are definitely leading and progressing that speed ska genre really well. Upvote to a fellow ska fan nonetheless!

I completely agree. Somewhere in the between is probably my favorite album of all time. The horn parts are becoming more intricate and even give me chills. Really excited to see someone else that even knows of streetlight.

The Octopus Project or Explosions in the Sky or Okkervil River.
The Octopus started with just making some catchy cool music but now they've really come into their own with an image, sound and attitude of their own. And their live shows are the absolute best.
Explosions have always been pretty good from the start, but their latest two albums are eons away from their first two.
Okkervil River. The Stage Names is such a great pop/folk/indie album.
calvin233 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]
While The Stage Names is an excellent album, in my opinion Black Sheep Boy is their masterpiece. One of my favorite albums.
justinteeth 18 points19 points20 points 6 months ago[-]
Protest The Hero. They went from terrible hardcore punk, to making a damn good album as they graduated high school (Kezia), to really doing something great in the field of progressive metal with Fortress.
obiwanjabroni 42 points43 points44 points 6 months ago[-]
Faith No More. The early funk shit was cool but they really developed in a way no one would have expected. A lot of people just stopped at Angel Dust but I think King For A Day & Album of The Year are masterpieces in their own right.
billtill 11 points12 points13 points 6 months ago[-]
I agree that King For A Day & Album of The Year were masterpieces, but I think Angel Dust was just the most perfect rock album ever! Now I can't wait to see what they come up with next!!! (Yes I'm hopeful that their 2009 reunion will turn into a studio album)

asamorris 52 points53 points54 points 6 months ago[-]
in the spirit of progression, I think Nirvana were clear on their way to becoming avant-garde masters. The things they were beginning to get into (and being close with Sonic Youth probably helped) were really exciting. It would have been nice to see that play out a little bit.
KevinOur 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago[-]
Then Dave Grohl decided to double back on the whole progression and from Foo Fighters.
asamorris 27 points28 points29 points 6 months ago[-]
on the other hand though, I quite enjoyed the first two FF records. Everlong is beautiful.
Fatjedi007 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago[-]
Agreed. I understand why people give Foo Fighters crap about their recent stuff, but those first two are brilliant.
EdibleAccount 12 points13 points14 points 6 months ago[-]
It's funny you should say that comment right after asamorris's.
In fact, Nirvana was becoming less about Kurt Cobain as they went along. Cobain began allowing his bandmates, particularly Grohl, to contribute to the riffs and writing.
So, it's funny that asamorris sees Nirvana as progressing, and you agreed, but then say that Foo Fighters is a digression.
Personally, Foo Fighters is different, and a force in its own right.
dorkasaurus 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]
On this note, I've been trying to figure out lately why Foo Fighters are still popular. Why? Their music lacks any edge, it just seems like such generic rock, and their lyrics are boring. I like Dave Grohl as a person, but I can't stand Foo Fighters.

Elliott Smith. OK, not a band, but still: the evolution from Roman Candle to Figure 8 is amazing.

1995-1997 were his miracle years.
Either/Or and Elliott Smith are the albums he'll rightly be remembered for, and New Moon is the icing on the cake.
His later stuff proved the limitations of a singer/songwriter, however genius, attempting to be a rock band without partnering with and empowering other talented musicians.
cromulent_word 13 points14 points15 points 6 months ago[-]
The black keys! There first album was just a little too rough (bad mixing and recording) and had a very amateur feel to it. Now they seem to have the 70's fuzz riff down and Patrick Carneys drumming just became very interesting.
applextrent 7 points8 points9 points 6 months ago[-]
While I agree they are getting better, I have to say that the "amateur" feel to their early work is one of the reasons it's some of their best work.
I'm so sick and tired of hearing layered softened computer polished tones and sounds. I love the grit, passion, and power of just two guys in an old rubber factory rocking out to the blues recording an album with a bunch of old crappy equipment.
srmatto 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]
I actually feel oppositely about it, I think the newest album sounds over produced to me and not nearly as pure as everything before it. I'm hoping that danger mouse doesn't lay a hand on their next album. The Big Come up sounds something akin to Muddy Waters, electrified delta blues, not amateurish. But anyways I love 'em to death.

I enjoyed The Bends more than I did Kid A or Amnesiac. In Rainbows is by far their best in my opinion. But it could be that way considering I only really got into them (and "Alternative" music in general) in the mid 2000's.
NodnarbMarshall 13 points14 points15 points 6 months ago[-]
Kid A definitely sounds better 10 years later, within the context of everything else that's come out of the music industry. (Not implying that Kid A didn't sound good when it came out, btw).

Looking at "Pablo Honey," it's hard to believe it was even Radiohead that did that. They started so...terribly, but since then it seems like each album is an entirely new experience, and they keep getting better and better. People like to hate on "In Rainbows," but I think that album is brilliant.
beatlesfreak1964 17 points18 points19 points 6 months ago[-]
People like to hate on In Rainbows? I wasn't aware of that. That's bullshit. In Rainbows is fucking amazing.
And yeah... Pablo Honey is pretty uninspired. It's impressive how quickly they went from run of the mill alt-rock to The Bends & OK Computer (and of course KID A / Amnesiac)

Refused. The Shape of Punk to Come is one of the best hardcore albums ever, period was a hell of a way out for that band.
Unwound- They were such an interesting band because with essentially every record they put out the near drastically changed their sound but still managed to keep it sounding like them and branching out. They started off as a relatively unremarkable hardcore band and kept growing until they finished their career taking two years to build a studio and put out a truly impressive double album that to this day has gone criminally overlooked.

The Hazards of Love, in my opinion, has to be listened to as an album for it to have full effect. It's not very catchy, as you mentioned, but listened from start to finish, it is more than the sum of its parts.

5318008 24 points25 points26 points 6 months ago[-]
Good mess or bad? Is this new lingo that the kids are using?
Defualt 29 points30 points31 points 6 months ago[-]
Bad mess. It sounded like for each song, one musician bothered to learn their part or maybe the basic chords, and then the others just riffed off that without much thought, like they thought they're so awesome they can sell an album where they didn't care what they actually played.
And there's the egregious lack of solos. Granted, it would have also sucked if they just tried to replicate the Pink Floyd solos note for note. But they just skipped solos altogether. They should have played the solos on a glockenschpiel instead of a guitar or something goofy or whatever if they wanted to, and improvised their own melodies, but they just skipped them altogether.
Something that really pissed me off was their approach with the eerie background voices from DSotM. The way Pink Floyd did it was they recorded random people asking them open-ended questions about profound topics like what they think about death. How did Lips approach it? They rerecorded the exact phrases Pink Floyd recorded, as performed Henry Rollins. The entirely opposite approach as Pink Floyd, and entirely unappealing.

Have to disagree! I think that Odelay is a fucking masterpiece. All his other albums are fantastic, up to a certain time. I honestly thought he had such an awareness of his music, and of the different genres he played with, that he could not go wrong. But starting at Guero, it went from phenomenal music to just really good music. It's not as interesting, I can't say why. I know it's all good and worth checking out, but it doesn't quite have that touch anymore.
Or maybe it's just my fascination that hit its limit.

Dredg. They started off as rap-core and ended up making beautifully composed indie music. The new one isn't their best, but it's still fairly solid (if you can look past some stunning bad lyrics).
Dillinger Escape Plan. Some think their last disc, "Ire Works" is their worst, but I disagree. They went from complete chaotic insanity to more straight-forward rock, and it's awesome. Their old style is still very apparent, but this one branches out more.
NadsatBrat 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago[-]

swabfalling 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago* [-]
Dredg's latest is an amazing album. No two ways about it.
It's a monster weighing in at over 60 mins and 18 songs, with nary a low point.
I was skeptical of Catch Without Arms, was too poppy IMO, grew on me, but The Pariah Parrot Delusion blew me away first listen and still does with each repeated listen.
The PPD was a culmination of their first 3 albums, with a level of maturity added on top of it.
Dredg is a band that truly gets better with time.
EDIT - Added more... Favourite band lol

Here's what I do with stuff like that (I had to do it with Thrice and Underoath as well):
Listen to the CD, and pretend it's not them. Listen to it objectively, without any expectations whatsoever. When you do this, you can truly appreciate it for its musical value, not what you expected from the artist.
swabfalling 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]
This actually works. Thrice was a natural progression for me (out of metal/punk to artsy, as I did at the same time), but Underoath really pissed me off with Define the Great Line. Skipped it.
I got Lost in the Sound of Seperation, and it blew me away. Went back and listened to Define the Great Line, and it made sense.
Still working on Daisy though. Loved DGRIM, even more so than I did Deja Entendu.

Every one of Tool's albums has been completely phenomenal, but I have to agree with cyclops79. Lateralus is one of the best albums to ever be recorded to media, and while 10,000 Days does some things better (Jambi, Wings for Marie pt.2) it kind of trailed off after Rosetta Stoned. Seemed like Tool built up to a crescendo with Lateralus, then leveled off with 10,000 Days. Can't wait to hear what they come up with next.

I want to agree with this, but it's really hard to say anything is better than Aenima. I think Lateralus is their most cohesive, transcendent work, and 10,000 Days may have the best written songs. Regardless, I'm ok with putting Tool on just about any list of merit.
Danny Carey's drumming and Justin's basslines have gotten better over the years, that's for sure, but I can't say I like any album better than Aenima (not that I like Aenima better than the new stuff either). That said, I really look forward to their next album. I'm sure it will be littered with brilliance.

Modest Mouse.
I like Dramamine, but every other track on Long Drive is kind of bad. Lonesome Crowded West was really good, The Moon and Antarctica was better, Good News was fan-fuckin-tastic, and We Were Dead was just as good. Not to mention No One's First - that definitely deserves high marks.
They are the most popular band I can think of that hasn't sold their soul to the fangirls. Some not-so-lucky offenders who used to be awesome include Death Cab for Cutie, Kings of Leon, and Green Day.
TL;DR Modest Mouse has steadily gotten better and resists many of the usual pitfalls of popularity.
TakeNote 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]
Nick Drake. I love his first two albums, but Pink Moon is a masterpiece. It's too bad he was gone so soon- but I guess without his death, we probably never would have heard of him.

System of a Down, they really only perfected their style in Toxicity and haven't gone bad. Yet.

Their ambient works were good and all, but not as revolutionary as later albums like the Richard D. James album would be.

My Bloody Valentine - their early releases (e.g. Geek) were pretty dreadful... they went on to make Loveless, arguably one of the most innovative and beautiful albums of the 90s.

The Sounds-
Although not the most popular band, they've been a band i've listened to since their debut album. Of course, all of their music is quite catchy, but the songs they have on their newest album 'Crossing the Rubicon' are just...amazing compared to what they used to write.
jsilfies 18 points19 points20 points 6 months ago[-]
I'm going to get flamed and down voted like crazy. But i have to post what i believe in. HANSON. There 1997 POS album was pretty bad (but they were 14). They are all now in there mid to late twenty's and the soulful music they create is inspiring and catchy. They are a hard working and they don't get any credit or respect. "The Walk" Is one of my all time favorite albums.
Sahwyn 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]
I wish most people were as open minded as you. “The Walk” is also my favorite album (so far). They improve with everything they do, so they are a great choice.

edit I listened to "the walk" and thought it was pretty awful.

Some people may disagree, but Thrice.
Every album seems to have more heart, and you can tell they're doing it for the music.
I love their old stuff but Vheissu, Alchemy Index, and Beggars are all incredible pieces of work.
PS. While Mastodon's latest is great, nothing compares to Remission. That album blows me away everytime I listen to it.

This is going back a few years, but the Beastie Boys progressed as musicians throughout their career.

Not true. They peaked at Paul's Boutique. While the production on 5 Boroughs was good, they sound like a bunch of whiney over-PC whimps.

You hit it on the head, 5th eye. I would have said this up until Deliverance/Damnation... you know what, maybe even Ghost Reveries. But they definitely plateaued with Water Shed... don't get me wrong it's a very good album, but no more leaps forward IMHO. I think it might have just a little to do with the loss of Martin Lopez. The new drummer is solid, but doesn't have any of the crazy creativity of Lopez.
EDIT: Thoughts on Martin Lopez
Teggus 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]
The hell? Did I just not notice the blues solos, detuned acoustic weirdness, Mellotron player and middle eastern sitar jams on Blackwater Park? Opeth may have 'plateaued', but the last five albums are anything but retreads.
Recognizably the same artists, yes. Generic, no. I wouldn't mind if they stay on that plateau for the next 20 years.

Napalm Death - the (co)creators of grindcore. They've been around for 20 years now, and their recent albums are some of their best and most intense. I'd say starting with "Enemies of the Music Business" and forward. They removed some of the more overt death metal influences from their stuff (may have had something to do with Jesse Pintado leaving the band / dying), and added back in some of the angry hardcore that they had lost over the years. Amazing stuff. If you like extreme metal/hardcore/grindcore, and you're young enough to have missed them so far, they are well worth your time to check out.

Cloistered 19 points20 points21 points 6 months ago[-]
I didn't really like Icky Thump at all. De Stijl is probably my favorite, and Elephant a close second.
orangefur 8 points9 points10 points 6 months ago[-]
I'd have to say it's the opposite. Their new stuff is still good but I love the blues from their earlier albums. It has so much passion and honesty. On Icky Thump it seems to me that Jack is trying to many musical styles. I will admit Icky Thump is a much better album than 'The White Stripes' and 'De Stijl' but i can't get enough of that blues.
Bananageddon 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]
Icky thump has some great tunes (300mph, You don't know what love is, the title track) but it also has Prickly thorn but Sweetly Worn, which I think is the weakest track the White Stripes has ever put out. My favourite White Stripes album has to be White Blood Cell's but that' s mostly cos its the one that made me stop listening to Blink 182 / Greenday et al and take a proper interest in music.
