You are also wrongly making the assumption that everyone at the college in making this decision holds different religious points of view than she does.

Considering where the school is located, I would believe it's fair to assume a percentage of the faculty directly involved with her education actually share her views, but because they actually learned something in college, they understand what having a "proper professional disposition" means.

You've finally put into words what I've been trying to wrap my brain around for I don't know how long.

I guess I'll never really understand advertising, however. I mean, right now as I type this, there is a StarCraft II add over there on the right and for the life of me I can't understand why Blizzard / Activison would feel the need to have to advertise the 800 pound gorilla of video games on this site. It just seems like a waste of money for them to advertise that game here (but then again, I could just be speaking from my own bias since I am aware of the gaming community).

Like I said, how advertising really works makes little sense to me (though I'm sure it's just as effective on me regardless if I understand how it all comes together and which cabal is really making the money).

I can see how generating brand awareness can work well in a place like this, but generating traffic seems to be sort of pointless.

I probably don't understand a great many things (in fact I'm sure I know I don't know a great many things), but let's say I built a website and managed to get 3 million visits a day. What good does all that traffic really do me? Are people really buying that much "stuff" online after clicking out of reddit or Digg? Or does just having big traffic numbers alone somehow make the investors feel like business is good.

I'm not assuming you know the answer to any of this, like I said, I'm just curious.

I have a question.

How much impact do these paid marketers actually have on a site like this? Do they really generate a fair amount of revenue or are they just hoping to get their "product" part of a larger discussion?

I suppose there is money to be made in it, otherwise they wouldn't do it, I'm just curious if it really is all that effective?

How can i get my art into galleries or more accessible to people? I'm talented. [PICS]

turtlestack 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

If she wants to make a living off her art, you are 100% correct.

The funny thing is, however, that let's say she does get recognized in a small-ish art community and one day some redditor from out of town sees these very same pictures hanging up on the wall of an obscure sushi bar, snaps a few iPhoto's of them, uploads them to reddit with a snazzy title that gets 61% upvotes, 4000 comments, one of which is a New York gallery owner who knows some people desperate to give all their money to people who paint this sort of thing. In other words, same pictures, different scenario.

Hmm, I kinda got off topic there, but I'll never be able to wrap my brain around how subjective some things can be. A person can toil away their entire life and no matter how talented they are, never get even a nod of penniless recognition, while someone else can do just 1 crazy thing, get noticed on the internet and turn it into a book deal or something.

And, yes, I know life isn't fair ... it's just that, well, it's so not fair sometimes :)

I don't care what you say, I'm judging this book by its cover and there's nothing you can do about it.

Hmm, he wrote a book called "Help! A Bear is Eating Me!", so therefore he must be a redditor.

They both were.

The only thing I didn't like about Nolan's version was it represents the trend of remaking films that I still have a warm ticket stub laying around for.

I keep half expecting to hear about an Avatar remake for 2011.

True. Here she'll probably get more exposure.

But that's the problem she's facing - she is having trouble getting noticed so she took a chance, made a bold statement (which around here can get you crucified) and now has at least a few people looking at her work.

Sometimes being an artist means being bold too.

I never would have clicked the link if she hadn't said "I'm talented". That's what got me to click - I was expecting the worst and was gladly proved wrong by her talent.

Artists need to do something to stand out from the crowd to get noticed, and she did that quite well.

You are talented. I love the colorful, Spanish style whimsy to all your pieces, and I really love this one.

I have no idea how to help your work get more noticed, but I appreciate getting to see them. Thank you for posting this.

Holy crap. Sure, I built models as a kid, but I never, ever saw one built as well as this.

Sounds like a typical day on reddit.

I learned that Reddit loves Mitch Hedberg, but what do you think of this guy?

turtlestack -1 points0 points 3 days ago[-]

The fact that he doesn't get reddit-memed all the time is, in my opinion, a sign of respect and that it's pretty much taken for granted by many that he's excellent.

However, it is nice to see him get the occasional posting here. He does deserve it.
